To edit the qbregistration.dat file from within the QuickBooks program:
  1. Locate the version of QuickBooks that was installed with the incorrect license number or product code. Replace InstallID with the correct product code. Use the following format when you enter the numbers:000-000. Do no remove any of the brackets. Replace LicenseNumber with the correct license number.
  2. Whereas Intuit has provided a convenient way to 'Change (My) License Number' from the Manage My License menu option of the Help menu (access shown above), simply by entering the new license number in the fields provides, then selecting Next, and Finish, and then Restarting your Computer after QuickBooks and all other Programs are Closed, the same can not be said for changing the 'Product Number.'

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Access the Product Information screen by using the F2 key on the keyboard or CRTL + 1.
  3. Access the Tech Help application by using the F3 key or CRTL + 2.
  4. Select the Open File tab.
  5. Select qbregistration.dat in the list of files on the left.
  6. Click Open File. The qbregistration.dat file opens in Notepad.
  7. Make a backup of the qbregistration.dat file before editing. To do this:
    1. Select Save As from the File menu.
    2. Select the Desktop on the left of the Save In window.
    3. Click Save.
    4. Close out of the file and re-open it from the Tech Help application window.
    5. Exit out of the QuickBooks program.
  8. The qbregistration.dat file shows information on all installed QuickBooks products. The following sections indicate the version and edition of each installed program:
    • VERSION number= “21.0” (2011) or “22.0” (2012) or “23.0” (2013) or “24.0” (2014)
    • FLAVOR name=”QuickBooks Simple Start =atom, QuickBooks Pro=pro, QuickBooks Premier (not Accountant Edition) = superpro, QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition=accountant, Enterprise Solutions = bel, Enterprise Solutions Accountant Edition=belacct.
  9. Locate the version of QuickBooks that was installed with the incorrect license number or product code.

  4. A Windows box will be displayed with the following message, “Windows cannot open this file.” ChooseSelect Program for a List and click OK.
  5. Select Notepad and click OK to open the file. You may need to scroll through the Other Programssection if Notepad is not listed as a Recommended program..
  6. Make a backup of the qbregistration.dat file before editing. To do this:
